Patterson Hood On Thriller

Patterson Hood On Thriller

Last week we linked to a stream of Thriller 25 (in stores today), which includes a 25-year-old rarity ("For All Time") with new vocals, and 2008 collabs with will.i.am, Fergie, and folks who aren't even in Black Eyed Peas. If you're not yet sick of MJ nostalgia, read Patterson Hood's "Smell the Glove," the Drive-By Trucker's column in the new Paste. "For the record, I consider 'Billie Jean' one of the definitive singles of the entire Rock Era and a piece of pop songwriting at its best." Also, he thinks Off The Wall is the best MJ album? Maybe it's a Southern thing.

I'm from the South and I have to agree, Off the Wall is MJ's best album.

I'm originally from Illinois, and I have to agree, Off the Wall is MJ's best album. Anyone from the North, East and West care to make this shit official? Off the Wall kicks Thriller's ass six ways to Sunday. I have to disagree with PH about "Human Nature" though. I don't care if it was Toto. That song fucking killed.

Hi. I'm from Los Angeles, California. And I would just like to say that I too agree that Off the Wall is Michael Jackson's best album.

'Off the Wall' IS Michael's finest, regardless of geographic location.

It's not limited to the South. I'm Mid-Atlantic, and Off the Wall is hands down the best. I think its a continuity thing. From song to song, Off the Wall sounds like a complete, tight album. Thriller's songs are so uh, genius, they kind of compete with one another. I guess it depends on what you're looking for. But for the album's sake, Off the Wall is def better.

maybe it is a southern thing. i'm from north carolina [well, now i'm a seattle resident], and i wholeheartedly prefer "off the wall" to "thriller." i mean, "billie jean" and "pyt" are probably two of the greatest pop songs ever, but as a whole, "off the wall" is definitely better.

I'm originally from VA but grew up in the 'burbs. Now live in Seattle....Off the Wall is clearly MJ's best work. It served as a great springboard for Thriller.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...

Premature Evaluation: of Montreal - Skeletal Lamping

Skeletal Lamping is anything but skeletal. When we took a close listen to album closer "Id Engager" we mentioned it wasn't the strangest, most ambitious, or best tune on of Montreal's new one, but after absorbing the other 14 tracks,...
