Wong Kar Wai's first English feature, which featured the acting debuts of Norah Jones and Cat Power, is this week's nominee in Videogum's Hunt For The Worst Movie Of All Time. It's pretty terrible, save for Chan, who remains the... CONTINUE READING HOW BAD IS MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS?»

Chan Marshall is really into covers. She, of course, has The Covers Record and its Starbucks-ready sidekick Jukebox as well as some Cat Stevens coverage for the love of diamonds and Nerves coverage for Cingular. This second video from Modern Guilt doesn't add much in the way of exciting visuals. It's black and white, Beck and his rhythm section performing the heavy album opener in a lonely white room. No cameo from Miss Chan Marshall,... CONTINUE READING NEW BECK VIDEO - "ORPHANS"»

All signs point to Beck and Danger Mouse pulling a stealth release of Modern Guilt. All signs also point to Modern Guilt being the album to restore faith in Beck's untouchable changeling abilities. Danger and Hansen have been talking psych... CONTINUE READING NEW BECK - "ORPHANS," "GAMMA RAY"»

Maybe some of the festivals we've been announcing are too loud for the folkier souls out there (Devendra). Jukebox isn't our favorite album, no. We've mentioned that. And, recent Cat Power performance have been tepid enough that we find ourselves concentrating on the tightness of Chan's band (and Letterman's grip). But hey, this is interesting! Maybe Chan's been listening to folks who mention, rightly, that the covers on her prematurely snored Jukebox aren't up to snuff with the included originals. As previously mentioned, we aren't the biggest fans of Jukebox, though it does have its moments. Namely when Chan's doing her own songs. We're fans of "Song To Bobby"'s meta-Dylanisms and the remake of Moon Pix's "Metal Heart." Mostly it's... CONTINUE READING CAT POWER DOES "NEW YORK" WITH LENO WATCHING»

'Tis noticeable on the Jukebox cover art and the recent promo pics: Chan's sporting a mole! We noticed, didn't think much of the implications, but as Harp and the commenters at Matador's Matablog point out: Indeed, the wee beauty mark wasn't there before. What's the dealio? The controversy's neatly summarized -- with references to both Wino and Edie Sedgwick -- at Harp. To be honest, we thought maybe it was a stray Starbucks coffee bean.

MuchMusic is streaming Cat Power's new covers album Jukebox, which we found a sultry, but mixed bag. Props for getting "Theme From 'New York, New York'" on our iPods, though, Chan. Didn't see that one coming.
