Petra Haden Covers Cornelius

The a cappella cover queen Petra Haden sets aside her copy of Pet Sounds, The Who Sell Out and her guilt about associating with Journey -- and discovers the compositional pop wizardry of Cornelius and his Sensuous LP. Hear her cover of "Music" (English version) over at MySpace. What about her take on the Japanese version? You'll just have to get the EP, which also features Prefuse 73 and a remix by the Books. The EP's great, and we're not just saying that because it's called Gum. Promise.

UPDATE: Now with 100% more MP3 action...

Band To Watch: Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band

Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band are a new Seattle quintet with a long name. We've been enjoying their self-released Weepy EP, so we thought we'd post something from it. "Dull Reason"'s a an angular, noodling summertime pop jam with hills...

Quit Your Day Job: The War On Drugs

The War On Drugs play psychedelic, scruffy guitar grit with Dylan-esque (via Tom Petty) overtones and Springsteen anthemics, but a spacier vibe. Their Secretly Canadian debut full-length Wagonwheel Blues is full of spacious jams piloted by the war stories of...

Premature Evaluation: Conor Oberst - Conor Oberst

In "Eagle On A Pole" Conor Oberst sings "I never could get used to happy sounds," but his new self-titled album is actually plenty full of happy sounds. Take the brief clap-a-long march of "NYC - Gone, Gone." With a...
