The 'Gum Drop XCI: Hear New Patterson Hood, Win A Korg Kaossilator Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer

On April Fools' Day 1994, Patterson Hood moved to Athens, where he wrote an album's worth of songs called Murdering Oscar (and other love songs). He recorded them on a boombox in a friend's bedroom and gave out the results...  CONTINUE READING THE 'GUM DROP XCI: HEAR NEW PATTERSON HOOD, WIN A KORG KAOSSILATOR DYNAMIC PHRASE SYNTHESIZER»

Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood releases his second solo LP, Murdering Oscar (and other love songs), 6/23 on Ruth St. Records. On it he's backed by his DBT bandmates, members of Centro-matic, and (for the first time) his dad David Hood,...  CONTINUE READING NEW PATTERSON HOOD - "POLYANNA" & "PRIDE OF THE YANKEES"»

New Jason Isbell - "Seven-Mile Island"

Next month, onetime Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell, along with his 400 Unit, is releasing a self-titled album. We're told the opening track "Seven-Mile Island" is "an oblique eulogy" to Alabama harmonica player Topper Price. It's also a story about: [A]...  CONTINUE READING NEW JASON ISBELL - "SEVEN-MILE ISLAND"»

Patterson Hood Aims To Get Out The Vote With An MP3

Patterson always speaks to the big issues of the day, whether it's Thriller's anniversary or demanding records, so you knew he wasn't gonna sit this one out. Tomorrow's Election Day and the Drive-By Truckers' main man will be damned if...  CONTINUE READING PATTERSON HOOD AIMS TO GET OUT THE VOTE WITH AN MP3»

Outside Lands 2008 In Photos

This weekend San Francisco hosted the first-ever Outside Lands Festival. We're still nursing hangovers from a long summer of fests, so in our stead we sent Heather of I Am Fuel You Are Friends to take it in, and take...  CONTINUE READING OUTSIDE LANDS 2008 IN PHOTOS»

New Bettye Lavette Video - "Talking Old Soldiers"

This black and white Lex Halaby-directed clip finds Detroit's own Bettye LaVette alone at the Lockeroom Lounge, blowing smoke, drinking too much wine, looking at photos, staring at the walls, and singing about what it's like to grow old and...  CONTINUE READING NEW BETTYE LAVETTE VIDEO - "TALKING OLD SOLDIERS"»

Bonnaroo: It's A (Photo) Wrap

The tents are collapsed, the recycling collected, the hippies headed to the showers (j/k hippies don't take showers). Bonnaroo '08 now belongs to the chemically enhanced memories of its campers, and to message boards worldwide as people bitch about...  CONTINUE READING BONNAROO: IT'S A (PHOTO) WRAP»

Drive-By Truckers Drive By The Interface

Months after prematurely analyzing Brighter Than Creations Dark, the album's still in fairly steady rotation, so it's nice to see live takes of a few standouts. Though we would've loved to see "Righteous Path," you can't complain about Cooley's "A...  CONTINUE READING DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS DRIVE BY THE INTERFACE»

Patterson Hood On Thriller

Last week we linked to a stream of Thriller 25 (in stores today), which includes a 25-year-old rarity ("For All Time") with new vocals, and 2008 collabs with will.i.am, Fergie, and folks who aren't even in Black Eyed Peas. If you're not yet sick of MJ nostalgia, read Patterson Hood's "Smell the Glove," the Drive-By Trucker's column in the new Paste. "For the record, I consider 'Billie Jean' one of the definitive singles of the entire Rock Era and a piece of pop songwriting at its best." Also, he thinks Off The Wall is the best MJ album? Maybe it's a Southern thing.

Patterson Hood On "Demanding" Records, And His Fave Classic Rock LPs

Stream Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Drive-By Truckers' new opus officially comes out tomorrow, but you can stream it today at CMT. Since evaluating it prematurely, the record's been on the regular playlist at Stereogum Headquarters: We still say it's too long, but it's started feeling shorter. Current favorites: "The Righteous Path," "Two Daughters And A Beautiful Wife," "Daddy Needs A Drink," "The Man I Shot," etc. Hell, at this point we even like the heavily contested "Bob." Though it feels like "You And Your Crystal Meth" will stink forever.

New Live Drive-By Truckers - "The Man I Shot"

We've been spending a lot of time with the mostly super Brighter Than Creation's Dark, trying to play pedal steel along with "The Opening Act" and watching which less-immediate songs bloom, all the time curious to know how many debates...  CONTINUE READING NEW LIVE DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - "THE MAN I SHOT"»

Premature Evaluation: Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark

We love us some Drive-By Truckers and their southern-fried opera-writing ways, but Brighter Than Creation's Dark is longer than creation's long. Maybe longer. By our estimation, they could've chopped about eight of the 19 tracks and still had themselves a...  CONTINUE READING PREMATURE EVALUATION: DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - BRIGHTER THAN CREATION'S DARK»

New Drive-By Truckers - "The Righteous Path" & "I'm Sorry Huston"

Jason Isbell moved on and prospered from his questionably amicable split with Southern-fried Stereofaves Drive-By Truckers, and now the moon's shining on DB-T's turns in the studio. A few months ago they backed up Bettye, here they're kicking up shit...  CONTINUE READING NEW DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - "THE RIGHTEOUS PATH" & "I'M SORRY HUSTON"»
