Matt Friedberger Responds To Beck

The Fiery Furnace is indeed fiery in his "Unedited Blog Post" and "Imaginary Response!" to Beck's "Harry Partch." Note: The sentence "That was written in a style I associate with a certain sort of Zappa fan" appears in one of...  CONTINUE READING MATT FRIEDBERGER RESPONDS TO BECK»

New Beck - "Harry Partch"

Harry Patch, the longest surviving UK veteran of World War I, lived an honorable life, his very existence serving as a reminder to countless others of how far we've come, and at what cost, in matters of international conflict and...  CONTINUE READING NEW BECK - "HARRY PARTCH"»

Fiery Furnaces Discuss Radiohead "Feud"

Matthew Friedberger owns up to his unpopular Radiohead "fuck you" ("I don't have any time for them. There's a lot of music."). He also says he was misquoted but thinks self-censorship and "trying to control the context" are no fun....  CONTINUE READING FIERY FURNACES DISCUSS RADIOHEAD "FEUD"»

Fiery Furnaces To Radiohead: "Fuck You"

Matthew Friedberger clearly thought Radiohead wrote a song about American composer Harry Partch not UK old guy Harry Patch when he told them to fuck off for "brazenly and arbitrarily associating yourself with things that you know people consider cool."...  CONTINUE READING FIERY FURNACES TO RADIOHEAD: "FUCK YOU"»

Fiery Furnaces To Cover The Fiery Furnaces

Ever the conceptualists, "Matthew and Eleanor are taking time out from watching season two of Mad Men to record separate, complete, cover, tribute, albums, of, to, I'm Going Away. Only the words will remain the same." Keep eyes/ears peeled in...  CONTINUE READING FIERY FURNACES TO COVER THE FIERY FURNACES»

New Fiery Furnaces Video - "Charmaine Champagne"

Following an entertaining video interview with Joe and I'm Going Away's piano-woven sing-along "The End Is Near," the Fiery Furnaces have put together an artsy Phillip Niemeyer-directed clip for "Charmaine Champagne." (Thanks for the tip, Matt.) Eleanor and Matt (not...  CONTINUE READING NEW FIERY FURNACES VIDEO - "CHARMAINE CHAMPAGNE"»

Old Folks Review Dirty Projectors, Interview Fiery Furnaces

The last time Scott checked in with the old folks (his favorite folks) of Breakfast At Sulmay's, he requested they do Dirty Projectors next. And so they did. New Fiery Furnaces - "The End is Near" (Stereogum Premiere)

When we reported on the ever productive, conceptually minded Fiery Furnaces forthcoming eighth album I'm Going Away, we passed along Eleanor and Matt's essential Taxi vs. Titanic theories, noted the 12-song collection was recorded and mixed by Sebadoh's Jason Loewenstein...  CONTINUE READING NEW FIERY FURNACES - "THE END IS NEAR" (STEREOGUM PREMIERE)»

New Fiery Furnaces Album Out This Summer

It's called I'm Going Away, but the conceptually minded Eleanor and Matthew and Friedberger clearly aren't going anywhere: This is their eighth full-length since 2003. Mixing things up a bit, the 12-song collection was recorded and mixed by Sebadoh's Jason...  CONTINUE READING NEW FIERY FURNACES ALBUM OUT THIS SUMMER»

New Live Fiery Furnaces - "Wicker Whatnots"

If you've seen two Fiery Furnaces concerts, odds are one left you totally blown away, and the other left you totally confused. The Friedbergers do not play the same show twice -- not in song choice, and definitely not in...  CONTINUE READING NEW LIVE FIERY FURNACES - "WICKER WHATNOTS"»

David Byrne's Fiery Furnaces

We mentioned Fiery Furnaces getting Byrne-y in their video for "Duplexes Of The Dead," so it's good to see David Byrne repay the favor -- and say "eucalyptus juice" in the process -- as he puts his best Eleanor forward in this cover of "Ex-Guru." Cool (hot?), but if he decides to cop her style from the "Navy Nurse" vid, we're burning down the house.

New Fiery Furnaces Video - "Duplexes Of The Dead" (Stereogum Premiere)

On this Ouija-inspired Widow City standout, indie rock fox Eleanor Friedberger plays a sexually frustrated newlywed tormented by a magic word seldom seen and never heard. New Fiery Furnaces Video - "Navy Nurse" (Stereogum Premiere)

When the Fiery Friedbergers gave us "Ex Guru" in video form, we found ourselves stranded in the forest with some shadowy ascetic types and mystical kitties. New Fiery Furnaces Video - "Ex-Guru"

The bouncy-then-snake-sacrificing pop of "Ex-Guru," from the Fiery ones' latest LP Widow City, sees the Friedberger sibs frolicking in a sylvian setting. In describing the tune, FF said ""the loud guitar-drums-and-Chamberlin 'thunderstorm' part towards the end ... indicates the thunderstorm...  CONTINUE READING NEW FIERY FURNACES VIDEO - "EX-GURU"»
