The Mountain Goats Perform "Psalms 40:2," Discuss Suicidal Mountain Goats On Colbert

The Mountain Goats' Heretic Pride/Satanic Messiah followup The Life Of The World To Come came out yesterday. So far we've listened to the downcast, homeless nostalgia of "Genesis 3:23" and the totally devastating "Matthew 25:21." Out there spreading more verses,...  CONTINUE READING THE MOUNTAIN GOATS PERFORM "PSALMS 40:2," DISCUSS SUICIDAL MOUNTAIN GOATS ON COLBERT»

New Mountain Goats - "Genesis 3:23"

After Heretic Pride and the Satanic Messiah EP, John Darnielle's getting more Godly with the forthcoming The Life Of The World To Come, which features a 12-song tracklist made entirely of Bible verses. He's joined on the collection by Superchunk...  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS - "GENESIS 3:23"»

Mountain Goats' Satanic Messiah Can Be Yours For $6.66

Actually, you have three pricing options, but "devotee level" is the most appealing from a Satanic standpoint (go less for "congregant level," $10 gets you "acolyte"). The four-song EP exists in physical form as a double 7" limited to 666...  CONTINUE READING MOUNTAIN GOATS' SATANIC MESSIAH CAN BE YOURS FOR $6.66»

New Mountain Goats & Kaki King - "Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is In Another Castle"

In this Heretic Pride era, John Darnielle's getting involved in some interesting collaborations. His work with Aesop Rock might have felt more left-field, but despite knowing the Mountain Goat's a big fan of Kaki King, a collaborative EP was unexpected....  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS & KAKI KING - "THANK YOU MARIO BUT OUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE"»

New Mountain Goats Video - "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" (Aesop Rock Remix)

John Darnielle and Aesop Rock teamed up in the past to bring us a cut of "Coffee," and now it's a twist on Heretic Pride's sci-fi dropping "Lovecraft In Brooklyn." Darnielle himself explains it at the Goats site: ...I gave...  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS VIDEO - "LOVECRAFT IN BROOKLYN" (AESOP ROCK REMIX)»

New Mountain Goats Live Video - "Sign Of The Crow," John Darnielle Talks Sci-Fi

We were pretty clear about how much we liked Heretic Pride when we analyzed the Mountain Goat's newest offering. "Sign Of The Crow" isn't on the album, though -- it's a new one Darnielle debuted by his lonesome during a...  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS LIVE VIDEO - "SIGN OF THE CROW," JOHN DARNIELLE TALKS SCI-FI»

John Darnielle's Five Favorite Mountain Goats Characters

As we mentioned in our early rave of the Mountain Goats' Heretic Pride, John Darnielle is a darn good lyricist, peopling his songs with folks that over time feel like flesh-and-blood neighbors. Of course, they probably feel closer -- like...  CONTINUE READING JOHN DARNIELLE'S FIVE FAVORITE MOUNTAIN GOATS CHARACTERS»

The Mountain Goats Write A Super Tuesday Song

Over 80% of primary season's delegates are up for grabs tomorrow. You know how a random sample of random celebs want you to vote. Now it's John Darnielle's turn to plug for the electoral process, with a song custom tailored to tomorrow's big voting day, as solicited by public radio show Weekend America. It's a piano ballad called "Down To The Ark," and while it won't tell you how to vote, it will hint that he thinks you should. Even if he's sort of skeptical of campaigning tactics ("And several post-born babies learned the hard way: Vampires only kiss you if they've sharpened up their fangs").

As for that little map, since you're wondering: the states in purple are those where elections are being held by both parties tomorrow. Super! Thanks for asking.

New Mountain Goats Video - "Sax Rohmer #1"

Director Ace Norton's no fool: When creating a video, you take an artist's strengths, and exploit them. That's obviously Norton's approach to the great lead single from the Mountain Goats' deeply evaluated Heretic Pride, scrawling John Darnielle's winding lyrics around...  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS VIDEO - "SAX ROHMER #1"»

Premature Evaluation: The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride

As with any Mountain Goats release, Heretic Pride makes you want to listen as closely as possible, unraveling the threads, seeing how things tie into an overall narrative. There's nothing as obviously autobiographical or time-lined as The Sunset Tree material,...  CONTINUE READING PREMATURE EVALUATION: THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - HERETIC PRIDE»

New Mountain Goats - "Sax Rohmer #1"

It's fun when John Darnielle spreads genre wings, whether talking metal in Decibel, guesting on an Aesop Rock jam, or upping the instrumentation during his 4AD tenure, but we've always been most fond of the Mountain Goats when dude wails...  CONTINUE READING NEW MOUNTAIN GOATS - "SAX ROHMER #1"»

New Aesop Rock (Feat. John Darnielle) Video - "Coffee"

Aesop turned some heads with his match-up of lyrical heavyweights cut "Coffee" from this year's None Shall Pass (pulling a last minute verse from Mountain man John Darnielle) and it's another round of neck-twisting here with the track's 'tis-the-season clip....  CONTINUE READING NEW AESOP ROCK (FEAT. Doing for underground hip-hop what Run-DMC and Aerosmith, the Judgement Night soundtrack and Zach Galifianakis and the Bonny one did for the aboveground stuff, encyclopedic spitter Aesop Rock goes full force with encyclopedic strummer John Darnielle to talk "Coffee" (as...  CONTINUE READING NEW AESOP ROCK (FEAT.
