'Gum Drop Giveaway #93
We've spoken at length about the Pixies' well-packaged Vaughan Oliver-curated box set. The collection of the seminal band's complete studio output was ably organized by A+R/Artists In Residence, the design studio that did NIN's Ghosts I-IV deluxe editions. We have one copy of the Deluxe Edition to give away to one winner. The official writeup:
The Pixies: Minotaur - Deluxe Edition: Includes the five Pixies' studio albums (Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolitle, Bossanova, and Tromp le Monde) in the following formats: 24k gold plated CD's; Blu-ray Disc mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 96/24 high-definition; and DVD-Audio mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 96/24. Also included is the previously unreleased Pixies 1991 live performance from Brixton, on both Blu-ray and DVD, mastered for 5.1 surround sound. All discs are housed in a custom designed folio. This set is curated by legendary graphic designer, Vaughan Oliver, who with photographer Simon Larbalestier, were responsible for the visual aesthetic for all of the Pixies' albums. Oliver and Larbalestier have collaborated once again on Minotaur, to create their largest Pixies body of work to date. Included in the set is a 52-page book measuring 7.75" x 8.25", featuring the duo's work.

Joanna Newsom - "Kingfisher"
We've heard the stylistically diverse "81" pastoral and jazzy "Good Intentions Paving Company" outing. Now, after adding the gorgeous 9-minute madrigal/short story "Kingfisher" to the Have One On Me tracklist, the only thing to be sure of is that the... (more)
Under Byen - "Alt Er Tabt" Video (Stereogum Premiere)
Onetime BTW Under Byen's fourth album Alt Er Tabt ("All Is Lost") is out in April. The Denmark group's followup to 2006's Samme Stof Som Stof definitely has an anguished, although not done-for feel. In their new form, they're without... (more)
Archie Bronson Outfit - "Shark's Tooth" Video (Stereogum Premiere)
Four years after the worthy Derdang Derdang, London's Archie Bronson Outfit are set to followup that last LP's dark blues/rusty grooved garage rock with a long-awaited third album, titled Coconut. On production is sorta-ex-DFA-dude Tim Goldsworthy, whose stellar C.V. includes... (more)
The Fresh & Onlys - "Vanishing Cream" Video
A few days ago we posted the The Wicker Man-meets-Jewelled Antler sun splotches of the Fresh & Onlys' (sorta) eerie "Invisible Forces" video. Things get psychedelic in a more intensely tripped-out (and Sublime Frequencies DVD) way in the EyeBodega-directed clip... (more)
Colin Hay Responds To "Down Under" Verdict
Hay is not happy. He says the flute line in question was a live "improvisation" that made it onto the official "Down Under" recording a year after the song was written. Read his full statement, including a few other convincing... (more)
