Foreign Born - "Wander Aimlessly"
Los Angeles quartet Foreign Born release sophomore LP Person To Person 6/23 via Secretly Canadian. The shuffling "Wander Aimlessly" doesn't appear on it, but debuts in this week's Drop. We asked vocalist Matt Popieluch about it.
What inspired the song? The main idea came tumbling out of me as I was driving to a shitty temp job. I was listening to the instrumental version that [guitarist] Lewis [Pesacov] had given me and the lines "I tried my best to wander aimlessly" and "though I tried to sleep to remember how I felt in my dream" came out of my mouth and it struck such a chord in me, like my subconscious was explaining something to me about myself. It was during a time I was having a creative crisis, and the song is about self analysis -- comparing one's current self to one's former self. It chronicles a longing for the naivety and purity of the past, almost with an element of voyeurism. It's cinematic.
Is it possible to "Wander Aimlessly"? It seems like a motive or aim will always come into it. Exactly! It brings up ideas about the desire to experience abandon, but being unshakably tethered to all sorts of things. It also brings up "fate" or "destiny" if you're into that hay ride ... but to me its more about an interior struggle between what controls you and what inspires you. Being pulled in different directions by different forces.

New Jonathan Boulet Video - "A Community Service Announcement"
This dude's the latest signing to Australia's Modular label, landing with a tidy package of promotional offerings: a catchy, moistly breezy indie-pop debut single that couldn't be better titled for a meet-the-artist track; a subtly arresting/marginally tricked-out video; and a... (more)
New El Guincho - "Antillas (XXXchange Remix)"
When we first heard onetime BTW Pablo Díaz-Reixa, aka El Guincho, we were drawn in by "Antillas," a song we described as "a five-minute bundle of clattering loops and sunny harmonies." It was from the self-released Alegranza!, before he'd signed... (more)
