I truly believe Chris Martin didn't rip off Satriani on purpose. The four chords in the progression are very common, and the melody is so simple in nature that it can be assumed it was written without knowledge of Satriani's little riff, which you heard quickly evolve into more ornamented variations than the original. If you gave 100 songwriters this chord progression, I would be willing to bet at least 25% of them would come up with a melody similar to or exactly like this one. The greater crime here is not plagarism, but rather melodies lacking expression, emotion and variety. Despite my view on whether this was plagiarism or not, I still hope this ruins Coldplay's chances of winning a Grammy. Coldplay is just another example of media corporations selling something that appeals to the lowest common denominator in order to make as much money as quickly as possible. They prey on the fact that people aren't intelligent enough to appreciate real innovation. Other examples of this include the books Twilight and DaVinci Code, movies National Treasure and Hancock and douchebag singers Norah Jones James Blunt.

If people are into the whole singing piano player thing, buy and Elton John or Billy Joel album. Those guys have more talent in their right pinky finger than Chris Martin could ever hope to have.
