Okay, now that I've actually read Friedberger's blog posts... wow. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed by a musician whose work I've admired as I have been by this douche in the past week. Matthew Friedberger, please pull your head out of your ass and stop trying to make it painfully clear that you own a thesaurus and know how to use it long enough to reflect instead of react. The latter is apparently not your forte.

Not only does Beck win for the epic zing, but the song is awesome. Considering the, er, reasons for its creation I was kind of expecting a jokey throwaway, but I found myself very pleasantly surprised. Well played indeed, Mr. Hansen.

And I was wondering how long it would take for Friedberger to get his panties in a bunch over this! (Not very, apparently.) As much as I wish he would shut up and go away so I can listen to my Fiery Furnaces albums in the future without cringing, at least we get some more nonsensical, pretentious (and quite possibly coked-out) "press releases" to laugh at.

Yeah, I was just wondering why there's so much "In Rainbows is better than Kid A" sentiment popping up all of a sudden. I think some other best of the decade list (Gigwise, I think?) even ranked Kid A in the top 5 but put IR at #1. I don't get it at all either. In Rainbows is beautiful, but for me there is simply nothing like Kid A.

This. I'm American, but I was thinking the same things as I read most of the comments here.

Anyone who's bitching about the absence of Modest Mouse and Animal Collective in one breath and the high rankings of bands like The Libertines or Arctic Monkeys or The Streets in the next is completely missing the point. The reason the NME thinks Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is just a pretty good alt-country-ish album is the exact same reason most Americans think Up The Bracket is just a pretty good garage rock album. Disagreeing is one thing, but disparaging the selections (and omissions) that are obviously based in cultural differences is like complaining because British people like soccer better than baseball.

(And on a sort of related note, I think both of The Libertines' albums are fucking great, and I always thought it was a shame that the American music press either treated them as a novelty or ignored them altogether.)

You know what else is "no fun"? Douches who keep digging themselves into bigger, douchier holes every time they open their self-important, hypocritical mouths - i.e. Matthew Friedberger. Either own up or shut up - because no one wants to hear your Philosophy For Dummies pseudo-metaphysical bullshit "explanation." Musicians shouldn't be "concerned" with the way they're perceived by the media or their audience? They should just spew any ignorant, offensive, unnecessary crap they feel like blathering and let people "make it their own"?

Really?

You let me know how that one works out for you. From where I'm sitting though - and this is coming from someone who loves the FF album 'Blueberry Boat' - I think you might want to consider exercising a bit more "concern" in the future.

Also, I know you'll probably never read this, but what the hell. I'm bored right now anyway.

I'm sorry you had some bad experiences with overly zealous Radiohead fans... but you throwing all Radiohead fans into the 'elitist jerk' category is just as bad. Trust me, we're not all like that (although I'll freely admit that some of my fellow fans make me ashamed to admit it in public at times). Anyone who says you don't "get" Radiohead because you like pop *is* being a jerk though, and they're wrong. Except for their two experimental/electronic albums, Radiohead's music is, for the most part, simply a creative (and exceptionally well-executed, imo) take on alternative rock. There's nothing to "get" more or less than there is with any other band, and not liking or not being familiar with them doesn't mean a thing.

If you really do want to give Radiohead's music a fair shake, their album "The Bends" would be a good starting point if you're mostly into pop music. ("OK Computer" or "In Rainbows" are good choices too.) If you like it, keep listening... and if you don't, that's fine too. See how easy that was? :-P

...OR MAYBE people just think Matt Friederberger was being a douche. Because, you know, he was. He didn't "disagree" with Radiohead, he ranted about a specific song of theirs in a hypocritical, inflammatory and ignorant fashion. Most of the comments here are critical of Friederberger simply because he acted like an ass, not out of blind devotion to Radiohead - several of the comments even come from people who love FF, dislike Radiohead, or a combination of the two.

This kind of depresses me, because I like the Fiery Furnaces' music, and pretty much everything I've read about them before made them come off as 'charmingly artsy but down-to-earth' types. I don't know, maybe they're going for more of an 'ignorant hypocritical douche' image these days?

Plus, *besides* the sheer hypocrisy, disrespecting a great band for no good reason AND spouting off random insults despite clearly not having the facts straight first... slagging off a fucking CHARITY single probably isn't going to sit too well with uh, anyone. Yeah, how dare that brazen fraud Thom Yorke and his band of bogus cronies try to eulogize a war veteran and raise money for a charitable organization by sending out a short message to their mailing list! If anyone actually buys that supposed version of events, please let them know that I have a large sum of money in a Nigerian bank account I could really use help with...

I also love how she acts like they're all soooo horrible because they're rich and successful, as though they must clearly be out of touch because they're famous. I'm sure she wouldn't know anything about that, even though she's also a chart-topping artist (mindbogglingly, but true nonetheless) and the daughter of a celebrity, right? I get a really strong sense of "I'm a good person because I'm sticking up for the little guy, aren't I awesome?!?!" in her message and I don't care for it at all. Not only do I completely disagree with her opinion but the whole thing really reeks of hypocrisy in my opinion.
