I saw this performance and while I like the band I didn't understand what they were trying to accomplish musically. This song does not go with an orchestra which was obvious as half way in the song just became noise. They reached beyond their grasp on this one.

James Mercer is a great songwriter. I remember the Shins live performance on SNL which was lacklustre. My guess is they were scared stiff being on live TV but you would have thought they would be more lively. Hopefully any new line up will only further energize the already top level music. Is it me of does James sound just a bit like Robert Smith?

Lists are a complete waste of time because they're totally subjective and not everyone will agree. I'm not listening to any of these bands currently. I like the "unknowns" (i.e. the Wallburds out of LA or Ramin Street out of Chicago). WB's video is cool too http://www.vimeo.com/2672017

I like a lot of these bands but woudl argue the music biz is so screwed up right now none of us even know who the best are. A lot of these acts are just the best known. My 2 cents..

Only 12 notes in a scale people and only so many combinations to go around. It the tune is melodic at all there's always going to be someone who said they came up with it first!

Pretty stiff opinions here! I like Wilco's album but then again I am from the Windy City so I'm biased. It's not always so bad putting old wine into new jars.

I love this band. Normally I am not big on changes in a band's line up. But Mercer might end up with a better presentation of his songs with this move.

I personally miss the old Bono (with the higher vocal range) but on occasion this band still surprises me. You can like or dislike the most recent faire from this band but you're out of line to bag on them entirely. The span of their careers and the body of work they have delivered speaks for itself.
