On Stereogum

It's okay. It doesn't grab me like "Pork and Beans" did when it leaked. Hopefully, the rest of the album will exceed the atrocious Red Album. It'd be hard not to. Drummer Pat Wilson mentioned on his Twitter that they were playing more rock and less pop, though this single suggests otherwise.

This is okay, but I much prefer the album version. I'm one of the few people who really enjoys the new album. And since that opinion is unpopular, I shall anticipate the deluge of down-voting. Be gentle.

Hey, it's U2! Bring out the Freelance Rage Squad!

Honestly, just let people like what they want. What's so hard about that? If you don't like U2, don't buy the fucking album. If you like them, buy it. That is exactly how simple it is. And while you may accuse U2 of being hypocrites, you seem to forget that, while they do try to encourage people to think about AIDS- and poverty-related issues, they are still a rock and roll band. Much as many of you would hate to admit it, Bono has done way more for the cause he supports than most of your favorite musicians have done for anything that they believe in.

If nothing else, respect the fact that they used to put out some fucking awesome records. I don't really have high expectations for this one.

"Can't Stop Partying" is good. Rivers sounds really fucking strained on "Don't Worry Baby." And I feel pretty neutral about the third one. I was somewhat disappointed with Alone II, so I guess that's part of it. Still, good stuff, in general. Thanks.

Yeah, it's a fairly disappointing, bland series of covers, but I really enjoyed O Holy Night. I may be biased, though, as it's my favorite carol.

"Remaining fan"? Fuck you, Stereogum. Seriously. Shove your pretension up your ass. I can take a little bit, but I'm just tired of it. You've covered The Hives before, and you seemed perfectly fine with them then. But now? Oh, apparently it's not cool to like them anymore, so you'd better throw out a snide remark to entertain the kids. Drop the bullshit. It's not funny, it's not clever.

Serious or not, that doesn't change the fact that their lyrics and most of their music sucks, these days. Rivers is a lazy, unimaginative songwriter, anymore. It's sad. The band used to take the quality of their music seriously, even when they were goofing around. Pinkerton is a pretty goofy album in places, but there's no question that the band (or more specifically, Rivers) took the quality of the songs 100% seriously.

Sometime in 2001-2002, the band really stopped caring. Now, they just seem to knock out whatever tunes come into their heads, with little or no refinement. It's sad. I still love the guys, but they've lost that rockin' feeling, so to speak. I wish they'd disbanded after Maladroit -- and that's something I never thought I'd say.

Hey, here's a ProTip for ya: If you don't like the commentary, YOU DON'T HAVE TO WATCH THE MOVIE WITH THE COMMENTARY. Problem solved. Don't worry about it.
