In 1969, the French avant-pop singer Brigitte Fontaine recorded an intense, absorbing song called "Le Goudron" with free-jazz greats the Art Ensemble Of Chicago. It's one of those icy examples of spaced-out continental cool that you usually only hear on indie-film soundtracks or on the Spotify playlists of friends whose music-history knowledge is much, much deeper than your own. And today, Portland synth sprites YACHT have covered the song, keeping some of its aura but transforming it into a blippy dance banger. That apocalyptic French deadpan looks good on YACHT; this might be the best thing I've yet heard from them. Download it and watch the strobe-dominated video below.
