M.I.A.'s Matangi Rejected By Label For Being "Too Positive"

M.I.A.’s fourth studio album, Matangi was slated for release this April — in time for the Tamil New Year on the 15th — but has been pushed back by her label, Interscope, who has said the record is “too positive.” In an interview with Australian outlet Gold Coast, the rapper said, “[Interscope was] like ‘We just built you up as the public enemy No. 1 and now you’re coming out with all this positive stuff.” M.I.A. says she’s confused by their request to have her “‘darken it up a bit'” and that she is “taking [her] time to decide what they mean.” There is no word on how long she has to revise the album, if she does at all, or how far into the year the release date has been pushed back. She will, however, take their critiques into consideration, saying to Gold Coast, “That’s the point of being positive.”
