Black Boned Angel – “Part 2” (Stereogum Premiere)
The forthcoming album from New Zealand drone giants Black Boned Angel is called The End because it’s their final release — the duo of Campbell Kneale and James Kirk are parting ways after a decade of working as a unit — but the music really does feel apocalyptic, too. The End is an album in three parts, which span an hour-plus. It’s a demanding yet transfixing journey with valleys and apexes and no shortage of tremendous beauty; in many ways, really, not unlike the landscape from which it was born. “Part 2″ is, of course, the triad’s centerpiece, and the song has its own three-part structure: Pools of gentle ambient waves sit on either side of a mountain of thundering guitars and cooing angelic vocals, the whole thing moving at the speed of the earth’s rotation. So this is how it ends: big bangs and gentle whimpers and all manner and sizes of sounds in between. Listen.
The End is out 2/19 via Handmade Birds.
