Wampire – “Spirit Forest”
On “Spirit Forest,” Portland duo Wampire show how you can take a few simple elements and combine them to create something greater than its parts. The track is far more laid back than their glitzy first single; drums and bass create a groovy foundation, while organs and guitar riffs dance around on top. Like I said, it sounds simple, but Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps (with help from Unknown Mortal Orchestra bassist Jacob Portrait) allow their instruments to play off each other and recombine in new ways. Though “Spirit Forest” is constantly changing it up, it never feels busy or cluttered; rather the spaciousness only adds to the subtle eeriness of the track. Check it out below.
