Kanye, Danny Brown Dis MTV’s Hottest MCs List
Every year, MTV sends a whole bunch of A-list rappers into paroxysms of rage when it reveals its Hottest MCs In The Game list. The list hasn’t even been completely unveiled yet, but rappers are already getting heated about their placement — so much so that one Kanye West, #7 on the list, offered a rare, cryptic public comment on the thing. Kanye recently called Hot 97’s DJ Enuff to discuss the ranking: “What happens with these type of judges and people who are viewers, when you come in, I had the pink Polo and the backpack, then I’m checking all the boxes for that Tribe Called Quest-era and J Dilla and all that, so they champion it. They don’t like Givenchy-Kanye. They don’t like Kanye in a kilt. They don’t like Kanye in a relationship.”
Kanye also offered up the hilarious fun fact that he gave MTV VJ Sway his first TV before abruptly cutting off the interview: “I gave Sway his first TV, man. He came over to my crib in Newark, New Jersey, I was living in Newark doing beats for Jay and Beans and all them, and I was getting a new TV and I gave Sway his first TV. I didn’t really wanna like even call to talk about the number seven list, I just wanna tell everybody I gave Sway his first TV. And he need to remember that.” Listen to the full audio at Miss Info. A$AP Rocky, #8 on the list, isn’t too happy with his placement either.
Meanwhile, Danny Brown found a slightly more creative way to respond to his own presumed exclusion: A frantic and deranged new track called “#HottestMC,” delivered over a zonked-out psych-rap Harry Fraud Beat. Here it is:
MTV will soon finish revealing its list here, and the top four will presumably be some configuration of Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar, and, I don’t know, Lil Wayne? French Montana? Trinidad James?
