Watch The Flaming Lips Freak Out On Letterman
The Terror, the dark and anxious new album from the Flaming Lips, is already out overseas, and it arrives here in a couple of weeks. Last night, the band brought “Look… The Sun Is Rising” and their insane-looking new stage rig to the stage at the Late Show With David Letterman, bringing the nightmarish vision of Wayne Coyne’s tentacled synth-baby to poor unfortunate insomniacs all across America. Letterman, who was interviewing Captain Beefheart on network TV decades ago, was not cowed.
In other Flaming Lips news, Wayne Coyne recently revealed in a Reddit chat that the band is working on a collaborative album with a new buddy of theirs, the trash-pop queen Ke$ha. Coyne had nice things to say about her: “She’s funny, she’s humble. She’s badass. She’s everything. She’s awesome.” They’re calling the album Lip$ha, which doesn’t make any sense. Best case scenario: This gets the Flaming Lips back to writing actual chorus melodies. A guy can dream! In any case, watch the Letterman performance below.
The Terror is out 4/15 on Warner Bros. Letterman’s dripping-with-contempt “Goodnight, Jay” was probably the most transgressive thing about that entire video.
