The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Really, at this point, I’m just excited for Drake’s “All Me” video to come out. Right? That has to happen, yes? They’re making that video? If they don’t fuck it up royally, that should be an amazing video. But in the meantime, here are five ways to occupy yourself while you’re waiting for it.
5. Justin Timberlake – “Take Back The Night” (Dir. Jeff Nicholas, Jonathan Craven & Darren Craig)
This is a fun, beautifully assembled video that would probably be a spot or two higher if not for one thing: Timberlake’s shirt. I do not think I can adequately express how much I dislike this shirt. What is even happening there? Who was responsible for this alien geometry? Is he wearing a designer bib? The front panel of a bulletproof vest? Still, I mean, the kid can dance.
4. Night Moves – “Colored Emotions” (Dir. Isaac Gale & David Jensen)
If Nicolas Winding Refn ever gave up his artsy bloodlust and instead devoted his uncanny sense of design and atmosphere to making lascivious music videos for Ariel Pink-indebted bands, it might look something like this.
3. William Tyler – “A Portrait Of Sarah” (Dir. Michael Carter)
As someone with a pronounced weakness for arty ’70s car-chase movies (shout out to Vanishing Point), I’m embarrassed to report that I’ve never seen Two-Lane Blacktop, the arty ’70s car-chase movie upon which this video is based. If I’d seen it, maybe this would be higher on the list, who knows. But even without knowledge of the source material, it’s still easy enough to luxuriate in the old-timey drifter vibes on display in this one. A side note: Do not sleep on Impossible Truth, Tyler’s album of beautiful acoustic-instrumental meditations.
2. Nelly – “Get Like Me” (Feat. Pharrell & Nicki Minaj) (Dir. Colin Tilley)
2002 was a fun year.
1. FKA twigs – “Water Me” (Dir. Jesse Kanda)
This is basically what would’ve happened if Grimes had made “Nothing Compares 2 U.” It’s amazing.
