Watch Earl Sweatshirt Freestyle On Sway In The Morning
Look, we’re not about to start posting freestyles from Sway In The Morning. There are a million of them, rappers stopping by to spit canned bars against a definitively non-exciting studio-brick-wall backdrop while lounging way back in office chairs, and they are boring. If you subscribe to a rap blog or two, they clog your RSS feed all up and become a thing that you automatically click past. But when Earl Sweatshirt is involved, it’s a different story.
We already know, from tracks like “Chum,” that Earl Sweatshirt can come out with dense and well-considered personal raps, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard him do something fun and frivolous, albeit equally dense. On the Sway show, he hears the beat for Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot Remix” (so much better than the original) for the first time, mentions how he never wanted to “rap seriously on the radio,” and then rips into a few breathtakingly wordy bars that demand some serious unpacking. He’s obviously not doing this off the dome; this is a stray verse he had lying around in his head. Still: whoo! Watch it below.
Earl’s album Doris is out 8/20. Get excited.
