The Dirtbombs – “Crazy For You”
Detroit garage-punk lifers the Dirtbombs proved a long time ago that they’re willing to try just about anything for an album at a time; after all, they’ve already devoted entire LPs to covers of both soul classics and Detroit techno jams. And the band’s excellently titled new album Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey is another conceptual work: An entire LP dedicated to the warm and ingratiating sounds of 1970s bubblegum music. Frontman Mick Collins has been talking about making an album like this for a long time, and he and his bandmates are old enough to recall an era when “Rock On” and “Sugar Sugar” were radio staples. First single “Crazy For You” shows how complete a grasp of that sound that they have; its clean, unfussy hooks carry only the slightest hints of the band’s serrated psych assault. This is a must for anyone who ever owned the Ben Is Dead Retro Hell book, and you can hear it below.
Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey is out 9/17 on In The Red.
