Gardens & Villa – “Bullet Train” (Stereogum Premiere)
Despite being a California band, Gardens & Villa spent the past winter in the frozen Midwest recording their new album, the appropriately named Dunes. Their first single, “Bullet Train,” might have you thinking they’d hooked up with Prince at some point, but it’s actually DFA co-founder Tim Goldsworthy who’s in the spot of producer. Goldsworthy has worked wonders in the past with records like Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours and Hercules And Love Affair’s self-titled debut. “Bullet Train” is a funny thing — it has a muscular momentum in drums and guitar, but that’s balanced out by the silky synth stabs and the catchiest flute hook I’ve heard since I honestly can’t remember. The fact that this is a five person band playing everything live makes it even more impressive. Listen, check out the track listing below, and look for Dunes next year.
