Sam Smith, you guys. The 21-year-old Briton’s lightning-strike pipes helped Disclosure’s “Latch” fly off the handle, and he later re-teamed with the Lawrence brothers for another top-notch single called “Together.” Between those, we heard Smith imbue Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know?” with a new romantic depth; we liked that one so much that only “Afterlife” could stop it from winning the week. Now Smith has proven he can raise hairs just as effortlessly without the bombast of a full-fledged production behind him. The demo for a new tune called “Not In That Way” features just a guitar and Smith’s powerfully evocative voice, and it affirms that this kid is something special. Is the next Jeff Buckley upon us?
