Forest Swords – “Thor’s Stone (Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry Remix)”
Engravings, the dark marvel of an album that the British producer Forest Swords released earlier this year, is one of those albums that seems to create its own genre of music. But that genre carries echoes of some others: Ominous John Carpenter synthscapes, haunted doom metal drones, atmospheric Dilla-style boom-bap. One inspiration might stand above all the others: Dub reggae, especially in its most mythic, uncanny state. So it makes sense that Lee “Scratch” Perry, the eccentric architect of the dub reggae sound, has made a powerful remix of the Engravings track “Thor’s Stone,” adding a titanic digital skank and chatting mystic nonsense all over it. It sounds awesome, and you can hear it below.
