Flagland – “Comfortable Life” (Stereogum Premiere)
Next February Brooklyn’s Flagland will be releasing their first album for Father/Daughter Records, and their first single, “Comfortable Life,” is a wonderful thing. Kerry Kallberg sings gently even as his lyrics prickle and sting, and the music is a collection of small gestures: the delicate guitar melody, the twinkling percussion, all hinting at some sort of growing tension. That tension finally breaks completely in the song’s final minute; drums crash, guitars wail, and Kallberg’s fragile voice is replaced by frustrated screams. It makes sense that the album is called Love Hard, and on “Comfortable Life,” Flagland make you feel a lot of feelings in a very short span of time. Listen below and pre-order the album here.
