Liars – “Mess On A Mission (Black Bananas Freezer Jam Remix)”
During an interview I did with Angus Andrews back in 2012, I asked about his feelings on remixing, especially since Liars have embraced it more and more with recent albums. I’m paraphrasing here, but one thing that stuck with me was him explaining that it requires of a strong level of trust when handing off a song for someone to tinker with. Perhaps some of it had to do with the fragile and painful tone of WIXIW, and why they chose folks like Matmos and Vince Clarke for the remix task, but things are completely different for Liars here. Black Bananas’ take on “Mess On A Mission” perfectly captures how much fun the band sounds like it’s having on the new album Mess. Black Bananas smash the track to pieces and rebuild it as a noisy, trance-inducing clusterfuck of buzzing synths, clipped beats, and warped vocals. It is a complete mess in the best way possible, and another reminder of how well the band picks its collaborators.
Mess is out 3/24 via Mute.
