Cat Power x Chris Martin, Bon Iver, The Shins Soundtrack Zach Braff’s Garden State Follow-Up
It’s a bit of a punchline now, but Garden State, the 2004 directorial debut from Zach Braff, represented a major moment in indie’s progression towards crossover status. The Shins weren’t just a song playing in the background; they were a plot point. Braff hasn’t directed another movie in the years since, but his follow-up Wish I Was Here finally arrives this summer, and its soundtrack will follow Garden State’s lead. The Shins will once again change lives; they’ve contributed an original song, as has Bon Iver. And Entertainment Weekly reports that Cat Power sings the title song, which another Garden State soundtrack alumnus, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, wrote for her. Braff calls that track “one of the most amazing songs ever,” and if you can’t trust that guy, who can you trust?
Wish I Was Here opens in limited release 7/18.
