Courtney Barnett – “Being Around” (Lemonheads Cover)
Late last year, the Australian singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett came out of nowhere (or, you know, Australia) with her stunningly smart The Double EP: A Sea Of Split Peas. Barnett’s greatest asset is her sharp, unyielding, quizzical storytelling eye, but it turns out that she’s also a pretty great interpreter of other people’s material. Lately, she’s been playing a lovely cover of the Lemonheads’ 1993 goofball ditty “Being Around,” the one where Evan Dando wonders what you would do with him if he was a booger. Barnett audibly takes the song more seriously than Dando ever did, and she absolutely sells the sentiment behind the jokes. Below, listen to a live-in-studio version of the song that Barnett did in a recent Sirius XMU session.
The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas is out now on House Anxiety/Marathon Artists.
