BORIS – “Quicksilver”
A good trick to getting a handle on BORIS’ constantly shapeshifting style is paying attention to how they are spelling their name. If it’s lowercase then you can expect something experimental, droning, and maybe even gentle; if they spell it uppercase then you’re getting the heavy, hook-filled metal that they make with equal skill. After the more lowercase recent albums like the dreamy Attention Please, the droning Präparat, and the straight up J-pop of New Album it feels like a while since we’ve heard BORIS as we do on “Quicksilver,” a track from their appropriately titled new album Noise. Over seven minutes Boris stomp, scream, and stack riff after riff only stopping in the last few seconds to recede into a glistening coda. It’s one of the first times, maybe since even Pink, that they’re hitting this hard and it’s thrilling.
Noise is out 6/17 via Sargent House.
