Empires – “Please Don’t Tell My Lover” (Stereogum Premiere)
In a sense, Empires make timeless music — upbeat yet melancholy, pleasant but not saccharine, lyrics tangled up in the messy business of romance. In another sense, the Chicago quartet’s new single “Please Don’t Tell My Lover” reminds me of a very specific time: 2004, when the Killers and Franz Ferdinand were ruling alternative radio and making a bid for the mainstream. These guys have their own thing going, though, and that thing is highly appropriate for the summer that is about to unfold before us. Listen below.
