Late Bloomer – “Mirror” (Stereogum Premiere)
North Carolina’s Late Bloomer recalls the best of the Merge Records bands on which that label made its name and helped to put NC on the map. “Mirror” slow-burns at the start, building itself up around a simple guitar line and terse drums until it all falls apart in the middle — through the muddy fuzz, only one thing comes through clearly: “I’m not who I think I see in the mirror.” Late Bloomer switches gears throughout the song with ease, covering a lot of ground in a short amount of time. The same can be said for their upcoming new album, Things Change, which runs through genres with stunning grace and never misses a step. Listen below.
