Andrea Balency – “Adieu Créature” (Stereogum Premiere)
Avant-R&B singer Andrea Balency gets around, both in a geographical sense — half-French and half-Mexican, she originally hails from Paris but has also lived Buenos Aires, New York, and London — and in a musical sense, in that artists including as James Blake, Au Revoir Simone, and the Cure have asked her to open shows. It’s no wonder; Balency is about to release her Airhead-produced Walls EP, and it’s a spectacular piece of work. “Adieu Créature,” one of many fine selections from the set, is built around a chirping sample of Balency’s own voice. The song blooms from spare songbird electronica into a sumptuous ballad, matching her cooing syllables and falsetto squeals with cavernous bass and hiccuping percussion. It’s quite a thing to hear, so hear it below.
