Stream Viet Cong Cassette
Viet Cong are one of the new bands that have slowly risen from the ashes of the excellent and long-disbanded Calgary group Women. Now Viet Cong’s debut, Cassette, is available to stream in full. This is actually a reissue of a limited-edition cassette the band had been selling on tour, and even though it’s called an EP, it stretches to just more than 30 minutes, which could easily pass for an album. The music is what really matters here, though, and the band don’t waste a single minute. The already released “Static Wall” is still a highlight, but every song here is overflowing with unpredictable shifts, twisting guitar lines, and major emotional weight while still sounding like breezy psych-rock. It’s a fantastic introduction, and based on this and the “Bunker Buster” demo we heard a while back, the full-length they’ve promised to deliver this year can’t come soon enough. Stream Cassette via Pitchfork Advance and you’ll understand.
Cassette is out 7/8 via Mexican Summer. The band’s debut LP is due later this year.
