Future Islands – “Doves (Vince Clarke Remix)”
It’s tough to accurately describe what musical genre Future Islands work in, since they’re basically a genre unto themselves, one where dreampop atmospherics and ripped-throat death-metal roars and soul-gospel whoops can all peacefully coexist and come together into something coherent. But at heart, Future Islands’ sound is a warped, dramatic take on synthpop, and now they’ve brought in a synthpop originator to remix “Doves,” one of the standout tracks from their great new album Singles. Vince Clarke was a founding member of Depeche Mode, and he wrote many of that group’s best early singles. He was also half of Yazoo, whose Upstairs At Eric’s, from 1982, might be the best and most complete synthpop album in history. And since 1985, he’s led Erasure, a synthpop juggernaut in their own right. Clarke’s reworking of “Doves” cleans up its bleeps and bloops but leaves its weird beating heart intact. Give it a listen below.
Singles is out now on 4AD.
