Poppy Red is a project that has had many homes and members, but it revolves around songwriter Molly Long. Sifting through several releases on her Bandcamp, you’ll find songs that glow with a folk warmth as often as they shimmer with homespun electronic pulses. Consider, for example, last year’s “It’s A Lie,” which manages to sound like Angel Olsen and a campfire rendition of Portishead’s “Machine Gun” all at once. Now, Long has put together a band whose contributions match her own, and the aptly named “Crush” is the first result we’ve heard. Riding on a bright, insistent shoegaze riff for the first minute, Long parts the song’s waves with her vocals, as guitars crash into shining peaks over the steady bass lines. The song opens Poppy Red’s upcoming debut album, Hand Into The Fire, and while you can and should listen through their back catalog, check out “Crush” first. It feels like a very exciting beginning.
