Sakima – “Energy” (Stereogum Premiere)
Sakima is a London solo artist who describes his music as “left-field pop” and who has collaborated with the likes of Ryan Hemsworth and Cyril Hahn. Tuesday night the BBC’s Zane Lowe spun his latest single, and now it’s here online for the first time. “Energy” is a moody ballad in the lineage of James Blake and SOHN marked by skittering minimal percussion, a somber synth background, and beautifully simple lyrics. It sounds like love and sorrow echoing through a vast expanse — the sort of thing I wish Sam Smith was making. Listen below.
