Technically, in the most basic sense, Spookyland play roots-rock or Americana or some milquetoast genre description that probably has you fumbling around through bored tears to close this tab, but wait! They’re actually one of the more unusual bands you’ll hear this week — and one of the best. The Australian combo’s frontman, Marcus Gordon, has one of those voices that turns even the most straightforward music into something inherently weird, a quivering nasal warble that both sets him apart as a human alien and pegs him as part of a long lineage of iconoclasts. In previous single “The Silly Fucking Thing,” the shrillness was almost too much to bear, but on “Rock And Roll Weakling,” the title track from Spookyland’s upcoming EP, it’s tempered just enough to feel transcendent.
