Zola Jesus – “Dangerous Days (The Juan Maclean Remix)” (Stereogum Premiere)
Nika Danilova — better known as Zola Jesus — gave fans a massive introduction to her new album Taiga with “Dangerous Days.” That single came out at the beginning of the summer, and rather than giving us another album cut, Zola Jesus has taken the season to reconfigure the song via numerous remixes. We’ve already heard the star-filled Maps remix, which heightened the synths to a maximum of prettiness. Now DFA veteran the Juan Maclean has approached the song and chosen to explore its other key element: drums. The original “Dangerous Days” had a galloping rush that swept you along; here Maclean sets the song to a simmer and stretches it out into a 7-minute jam that thumps and buzzes, re-contextualizing Danilova’s vocals from the battlefield to the club. Listen to it below.
Taiga is out 10/7 via Mute, who between signing Zola Jesus, Swans, Ben Frost, AND New Order are seriously having one the best years in the 30+ year history of the label.
