The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
Here’s one nice thing about the whole U2 debacle: They didn’t forcibly beam any music videos into your iTunes! Imagine how those things would’ve looked. Actually, as it turned out, this was a great week for music video, and I had a hell of a time picking a #1 from a field of worthy contenders. In a slower week, almost anything from this week’s top five could’ve topped the list. Check out this week’s picks below.
5. Metronomy – “Month Of Sundays” (Dir. Callum Cooper)
Four identically dressed band members wander around a big concrete building, and nothing else happens, but you still get the great old holy shit how did they do that? reaction because of cameras doing impossible things that cameras should not be able to do. I don’t know how Cooper made this thing, and I’m honestly happy not knowing; the confusion is the appeal.
4. Les Sins – “Bother” (Dir. HARRYS)
Why are these arm-flailing inflatable guys so goddam appealing and sympathetic? Why do I want to be friends with them? They’re not real! And yet.
3. Sinkane – “How We Be” (Dir. Nick Bentgen)
It’s always fun watching people who are really, really good at doing something. This is especially true when that “something” is dancing. And if your music video concept is “really good dancers dance to a song,” you’re gold; there’s no reason to overthink that.
2. Fucked Up – “The Art Of Patrons” (Dir. Andy Capper & Mike Haliechuk)
Damian Abraham is my friend, and so I am hopefully biased here. But even if I wasn’t, and even if I didn’t have two kids the exact same ages as his two kids, the whole “hardworking dad comes home and hugs his kids” thing would punch me right in the feelings. A friend described this as “Mötley Crüe’s ‘Home Sweet Home,’ except with kids.” That is exactly right, and that is a magical thing.
1. Perfume Genius – “Grid” (Dir. Charlotte Rutherford)
I feel really, really bad not picking “The Art Of Patrons” as #1, but I’m not going to be the guy to underrate a cryptic masterpiece. When someone fucks around and makes something like this, respect is due.
