Khary Durgans & Rome Fortune – “Swim Team” (Stereogum Premiere)
“Khary fuckin’ Durgans, that’s the name” of the Providence/Brooklyn MC who teams with talented and unpredictable Atlanta upstart Rome Fortune on the new single “Swim Team.” It’s the title track from Durgans’ upcoming EP, and it finds him verbally flailing about in entertaining, eccentric fashion over hard-knock spaceship-trap production by Mike Irish. Fortune shows up halfway through to casually cruise over the beat. The whole thing is a blast, and it positions all three collaborators (Durgans, Fortune, and Irish) as ones to watch. Here’s what Durgans had to say about it:
The song started with Mike Irish wanting to produce a track for me and Rome back in May. Mike and I had no clue we were going to even make an EP at this point, so I think the song inspired the project haha. It’s pretty left field from what I normally do so I enjoyed the challenge and Rome jumped on it like light work. My last project had a bit more of a humble tone and it went under the radar of a lot of people, so I made a song to get out that aggression. Whenever someone undermines your worth just tell em, BITCH IM THE CAPTAIN OF THE SWIM TEAM”
