Jay Rock – “Parental Advisory”
Once Upon a time, Jay Rock was the most famous member of Califonia’s Black Hippy rap crew; he was, after all, the one who got to make a song with Lil Wayne in 2008. These days, he’s probably the least famous, with bugged-out peers Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul eclipsing his hard-nosed realism. But Jay Rock is still a very gifted rapper, an emotive tough guy with an explosive streak, and his new solo track “Parental Advisory” is a testament to how strong he can sound in the right context. It’s a classic West Coast trunk-rattler, all hot threats and icy synths, and it fits nicely into a post-DJ Mustard landscape even though its production sounds nothing like Mustard. Listen below.

There’s no news on a Jay Rock album right now, but I am ready for one.
