Real Life Buildings is the new project of Matthew Van Asselt, one-half of the team that runs the inimitable tape label Mt. Home Arts and a member of The Act Of Estimating As Worthless, who put out a great run of releases in the early part of the decade. It Snowed is Van Asselt’s first album as Real Life Buildings and it roars to life with “Thaw.” The first half of the song lunges forward with an uneasy confidence before dialing everything back for a wearied and tired back half. The lyrics border on stream of consciousness, going from waking up and listening to the neighbor’s snowblower to thinking about the stress of having to figure out where to park before going to a show, turning the mundanity of everyday life into something elegant. “So I’m setting my alarm earlier every morning/ so maybe I’m getting there,” Van Asselt sings with a sigh. It’s about the feeling of progress without actually making any, how the passing of time theoretically is supposed to signify that you’re growing up, but it often feels like you haven’t changed at all. It Snowed is out 11/6 on Mt. Home Arts. There will be a record release show at Silent Barn in Brooklyn on 11/10 with the Yellow Dress, Adult Mom, and others.
