The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

straight2video

We did it, everyone! We came up with the least glamorous music video ever made. I don’t know what held the title before this week, but I do know that nothing else will ever hold it again. That piece of beautifully ugly anti-glamor is below, as are our other four picks for the week.

5. Foxygen – “Coulda Been My Love” (Dir. Grant Singer)

I thought their album was an overindulgent, slipshod mess. But in concentrated bursts, Foxygen are capable of a very particular sort of deviant charisma, and that’s all over this video. Is Grant Singer only making videos with people who have that exact haircut now?

4. The Staves – “Blood I Bleed” (Dir. ?)

It can be a bit maddening when a music video clearly has a narrative but you can’t actually figure out what’s going on. With the sheer beauty of both its setting and its cinematography, though, this one overwhelms those qualms. That scene of the little kid making it to the top of the human pyramid is something else.

3. Pissed Jeans – “Boring Girls” (Dir. Joe Stakun)

The whole idea of a new music video for a nine-year-old song is a little mystifying, but if it results in some inspired lunacy like this, are you really going to complain?

2. Childish Gambino – “Telegraph Ave” (Dir. Hiro Murai)

That ending explains a lot. Also, Hiro Murai is really coming for Nabil’s neck lately. Nabil’s best-music-video-director-currently-working title is not safe.

1. Bonnie “Prince” Billy – “Quail And Dumplings” (Dir. Ben Berman)

And here it is: The least glamorous music video that anyone has ever made.
