Stranger Cat – “Sirens” (Stereogum Premiere)
Cat Martino’s musical persona, Stranger Cat, may be brand new, but Martino is already an established and prolific musical presence: Martino’s past works include touring with Sharon Van Etten, the Shins, and longtime friend Sufjan Stevens, as well as her enchanting, bass-heavy cover of Sia’s “Chandelier.” Now Martino and Sven Britt, multi-instrumentalist and the other half of Stranger Cat, share the first single, “Sirens,” from their upcoming debut LP, due out early next year. The track was inspired by the incessant blaring of sirens outside Martino’s Brooklyn apartment, but the song deviates from the industrial, contemporary context, opting to explore a different kind of Siren instead — the kind from Greek mythology. Martino, likening herself to Odysseus, invites us aboard her ship, which navigates a choppy current, like the fidgety soundscape of electronica that bolsters the track, to find the elusive sirens. In this way, the echo-laden, highly climactic chorus coincides with the goal of Odysseus’ journey: to hear but not fall victim to the dangerously gorgeous song of the Siren. Listen.
In The Wilderness will be out on Joyful Noise Recordings in early 2015. The “Fig Tree”/”Sirens” limited 7″ is out next month and can be pre-ordered here.
