When it comes to musicians soundtracking films, it’s more common for the band to have established itself in the music scene before transitioning to film. In the case of SQÜRL, it’s the opposite. The trio, which consists of renowned director Jim Jarmusch, film producer Carter Logan, and sound engineer Shane Stoneback, discovered their chemistry and collective potential while they were collaborating on the soundtrack to Jarmusch’s 2009 film The Limits Of Control. At that time, the band was called Bad Rabbit, but the name changed when the New York-based group decided to continue recording, releasing two EPs in 2013. Also in 2013, the trio teamed up with Jozef van Wissem to compose the soundtrack for Jarmusch’s film Only Lovers Left Alive, which was released as an album under SQÜRL’s moniker earlier this year. And just recently, SQÜRL released their third EP via ATP Recordings. Following three EPs and two movie soundtracks, SQÜRL return today with a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Ocean,” which drowns the purity of Lou Reed’s version in a sonic sludge of droning and lo-fi guitar.
