Grooms – “Comb The Feelings Through Your Hair” (Stereogum Premiere)
Grooms have had a rough couple of years. In 2013, longtime bassist and co-songwriter Emily Ambruso went on hiatus from the band for financial reasons, leaving singer/guitarist Travis Johnson as the only original member left in the lineup. And in November, Brooklyn DIY venue Death By Audio, the band’s home for seven years, closed its doors for the last time. But fortunately, if anything, Grooms seem creatively invigorated by this behind-the-scenes shakeup. Although Johnson’s guitars are still there, their upcoming record Comb The Feelings Through Your Hair allows the tight new rhythm section and some electronic flourishes to share the spotlight. Following the locked-in kraut-groove of “Doctor M,” the title track floats into the atmosphere with eerie synth and tendrils of otherworldly guitar before being brought crashing back to earth by the militaristic whirlwind of drums that dominates the mix.
