The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
This was another strong week for music videos, and it hurt my heart to leave things like Ryan Hemsworth’s “Too Long Here” and Majid Jordan’s “Forever” off. Even with all the strong videos out this week, though, the list feels like something of a placeholder for whenever Björk gives us some dizzy new vision for some song from Vulnicura. She’s doing that, right? I really hope she’s doing that. In the meantime, this week’s picks are below.
5. King Tuff – “Headbanger” (Dir. Jake Fogelnest)
When I was nine, my family moved to England for a year, and I had my pop-music awakening thanks to a hits-countdown TV show called Top Of The Pops. I loved it because it made following music statistically easy, like baseball, and because its sets looked like they came from sci-fi B-movies (and because pop music was really great in 1989). It looked exactly like this. Shout out to all the sad fake bands that the countdown flashes through.
4. Interpol – “Everything Is Wrong” (Dir. Paul Banks)
The idea of the members of Interpol having different personalities is something that had never occurred to me before. Hell, the idea of the members of Interpol having any personality might’ve seemed strange before this video. Paul Banks gets style and self-deprecation points for this one, and that final shot is a moment of perfect dirtbag triumph.
3. Modest Mouse – “Coyotes” (Dir. ?)
I know it’s not remotely practical to want a pet coyote, but I really want one right now.
2. Ex Hex – “Don’t Wanna Lose” (Dir. Lara Gallagher)
The best toilet-reading book I’ve bought in recent years is Destroy All Movies, a massive reference-book guide to every punk who showed up in a movie, mainstream or underground, during the ’80s — and to everything those movies got gloriously wrong about punk rock. Ex Hex’s video is a tribute to Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains, a 1982 cult musical that starred Diane Lane and Laura Dern alongside assorted Sex Pistols and Clash members. But it could’ve been a tribute to any movie in that book.
1. Tobias Jesso Jr. – “How Could You Babe” (Dir. Grant Singer)
It doesn’t happen very often, and even when it does happen, it doesn’t always work out. But every once in a while, a music video will give you the idea that you’re getting your first real look at a true star, at someone who’s going to be important for a long time. This is one of those videos.
