Obnox – “Menocause” (Stereogum Premiere)
There’s prolific, and then there’s Cleveland’s Lamont “Bim” Thomas. Aside from his early years as one of Ohio’s resident post-punk drummers — with stints in acts like V-3, Bassholes, This Moment In Black History, Puffy Aerolas, and the Unholy Two — Thomas has been feverishly churning out records of his own since 2011 for his solo project Obnox. While there’s still plenty of percussion in Obnox’s sound, it blends punk, hip-hop, noise and even gospel influences into an unholy mess of jittered emotions, politics and distortion. Know America will be his fifth full-length release in only four years and his second LP already in 2015(!) following Boogaloo Reed. Thomas described his latest as a concept album of sorts:
It’s a punk rock concept album, in which we take over a radio station that is not playing our records remotely and basically converge on the station, jump in the booth, and start playing our friends’ records.
Given the dismal state of radio these days, who hasn’t had that urge? “Menocause” is the first track from the record, and it laments soul-destroying, obsessive love with desperate vulnerability. Volcanic guitar fuzz threatens to swallow up Thomas’ eleventh-hour pleas, but if there’s any redemption here, it’s in the act of confession. You get the sense Thomas knows his imploring falls on deaf ears, but this is one hell of a Hail Mary. Check it out below along with the full tracklist for Know America.
