Mac McCaughan has been making great records with his band Superchunk for decades, and he’s been recording with his solo side project Portastatic for nearly as long. But he’s never released an album under his own name until now. In May, McCaughan will release Non-Believers, the first album he’s ever dropped under his own name. According to a press release, McCaughan made the album to “explore his attraction to that early-’80s era of music when punk evolved into something more introspective, focusing on themes of isolation and eventually turning into post-punk and new wave.” He says it’s about “the irony that comes with being 16 and having a car but not knowing where to go in it, or having a keyboard or a guitar and not knowing how to play it.” A trailer for the album features an absolutely gorgeous two minutes of music, and you can hear it below.
