Friday Fight: Should Dancing Babies Be On YouTube?

gabe: someone took down the baby doing the stanky leg video
gabe: oh, NOW you are going to start being a parent to your child?
gabe: i feel like if you don't realize what is going to happen
gabe: when you tape your baby GRINDING
gabe: on the kitchen counter
gabe: and put it on the internet
gabe: then you should not be allowed to remove that video when you change your mind
gabe: it's just fair to us
lindsay: yeah, there should be a lock.
gabe: i'm sorry, poor babies
gabe: i am sorry that your parents made you look/act the fool
lindsay: They have websites now that are like YouTube but just for parents to post videos of their kids so only their friends and family see.
lindsay: So, like, basically, I want to hack into one of those websites.

lindsay: Though I bet they're all really boring videos.
lindsay: "Ooh, I don't want this video of little Emma taking a nap to become a viral sensation!"
lindsay: "I must protect it!"
lindsay: I want to see the practice videos where they're screaming at them
gabe: you can
gabe: it's called Toddlers and Tiaras
gabe: and it's amazing
gabe: i mean, to be fair, people always tell you that you have no idea what it's like to raise a kid
gabe: and i think that's probably true
gabe: at some point you probably get so exhausted
gabe: that you just HAVE TO tape them doing the stanky leg on the kitchen counter and post it on-line
lindsay: is it weird that I'd never heard of this dance until this week and this video?
lindsay: or this song?
gabe: i would be really surprised if you had heard of it before
lindsay: I just don't run around in suggestive dance circles.
lindsay: Like that baby does.
lindsay: There are too many babies in that scene.
gabe: well, to be fair to the babies
gabe: you just wrote me an email the other day asking if i'd heard of this song "Shake it like a polaroid picture" by The Outcast
lindsay: hahaha. Because I'm so white!
lindsay: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=stanky+leg+kid&aq=f
lindsay: there are so many results for stanky leg kid!
gabe: on the one hand, as someone who doesn't have kids
gabe: i feel like it's weird for parents to film their babies
gabe: doing the stanky leg and putting it on the internet
gabe: and on the other hand
gabe: i feel like i would totally be one of those parents
gabe: if given the chance

lindsay: yeah, it probably takes incredible discipline.
gabe: i basically see children as very expensive toys
lindsay: Well, everyone who uploads a video on youtube has a choice about whether to make it private or not
gabe: class dismissed!
gabe: have a good weekend, professor YouTube
lindsay: I think in the case of Henry
lindsay: the little red headed dancing boy
lindsay: He just has a lot of talent!
gabe: well, in the case of henry
gabe: he's the new david after the dentist
gabe: dude wants it
lindsay: like, nobody could make Henry be that good at dancing against his will.

[videoembed size="full_width" alignment="center"][/videoembed]

gabe: he's hungry
gabe: he wants the glory
lindsay: I think one way to look at it is if youtube had existed when you were a kid, would you, now, want to have had a video of you dancing there?
lindsay: I think I would love to have that, now. I wouldn't be mad.
gabe: right
gabe: you would be embarrased from 10-15
gabe: or whatever
gabe: and then you would be ok with it
lindsay: I was already embarrassed from 10-15.
gabe: oh come on
gabe: more like 10-30?
lindsay: you know, these kids are probably just doing what they've seen their parents do.
lindsay: I think if a parent takes a kid's dancing video down they have to put one up of them doing it
gabe: it's only fair
lindsay: that mom totally did the stanky leg dance for that kid, and she probably looked ridiculous.
lindsay: We just need to put hidden cameras in the hands of kids.
gabe: cameras and brains
gabe: cameras alone are not enough
gabe: kids are too stupid
lindsay: yeah.
gabe: dance, dummies!
